I am Winston and I am the founder and primary designer here at Podi, but at heart I am a car enthusiast just like you.

When I purchased my first Audi A4 in 2006, I was looking for a boost gauge solution and just could not find anything that worked with the beautiful interior in my car. All available options were low quality, did not match the interior of the car and worst of all, the installation of the gauge pod was to be glued, taped or velcroed onto thesteering column! That's nuts!

So what did I do? I decided to make my own boost gauge setup.

Make something that installs just like a factory part and looks like Audi made it themselves. When I was done making my gauge pod, I posted up a picture of it on Audizine.com and other enthusiasts told me they would buy one if I made it.

The power of the internet happened and I got enough requests that I decided to invest in an injection mold, made the very first OEM quality Audi A4 single gauge pod and Podi (Pod for an Audi) was born!

It's been almost 10 years now and I am still designing the best products I can for car enthusiasts just like you.

You don't believe me? Well let's go over the design process for the newest Subaru gauge line I just made:

After the success of the custom VW Mk6 Golf R gauges I made in 2012, I was approached by the Subaru community in June 2013 to make a matching gauge lineup for the 2008-2014 WRX/STI.

I started making the new dial layouts and mocking them up

Now I have to get the positioning of the text and numbers positioned just right on the dial. While this may be fractions of a millimeter when you shrink the layout down, to me it is the difference between a layout that looks OK to one that looks great.

Take a look and you decide! The dials on the left side are my master layouts and on the right side are the manufacturing mockups.

Manufacturing the dials for the new line of gauges was approved and I received the dial samples on July 10, 2014.

If you have been keeping track, the dials took over a year to get from initial concept to production! But don't you agree they look great?

It is now January 23, 2014 and the hardest step is finding the right color LED to match the factory cluster colors.

Here are gauges installed with 3 different LED samples from manufacturers that said they match the Subaru cluster color. As you can see they are quite different.

These color match attempts were not close enough for me even
though many customers liked what they see. How about you?

It is now August 12, 2014, so it has taken 8 months but I am happy with this color match. Can you see the difference?

It's now December 4, 2014, so 18 months have past since this project started, but I refuse to rush a product to market just to have something to sell. It's got to be perfect before I'm happy to put my name behind it!

The first production run of Subaru gauges arrived and were shipped out to all customers who placed a presale order.

While I would love to say the initial production run was problem free, this was not the case as a few customers reported issues with only the boost gauge acting strange.

As I am new to the Subaru world I needed help from my customers to determine what the issue was. It turns out the LED that I selected was causing interference with the infrared receiver circuit in the boost gauge, so I had some prototype boost gauges with an updated circuit made and sent out to testers to see if we solved the problem.

After two weeks of testing all testers reported back that the boost gauge now works perfectly and the problem is solved!

People that missed the last offering have asked for an oppourtunity to buy gauges, I am now ready to proceed with a third production run! But I need you to place an order before I can make them.

Due to the limited market for this very customized gauge line, there is a minimum requirement of 300 gauge sales that need to be placed before I can start manufacturing.

Review of Gauges

Packaging and Install:

Packaging of the gauges were great and everything you need is there to do the install! You do not need to go out and buy fuse taps/fuses or wire connections, but I do suggest buying a ring terminal connector for the ground wire (fork connector is slightly on the small size for our bolts/screws). If you have 2 gauges, get a connector that is 10-12 gauge to combine the two. That is the only thing I would recommend buying. Also forgot to mention on here the pressure sender are 1/8" NPT, so buy the right galley plug.

Installation is very easy to do, its essentially plug n' play, except for the usual install like any other gauges. Depending on your gauges it will determine how much work you need to do. For oil pressure, I used the plug under the alternator, which requires you to remove the alternator. 24mm deep socket to remove old sender. New sender fits under alternator without any issues. Boost set up is very simple to do, use supplied T-connector to T off from BPV to sender. From here on its:

  • Harness from Boost and Pressure sender to provided power box(es) (A power box for each sender)(plugs right in, noneed to weld/tap/splice wires)
  • Wire harness from Gauge to power box (again plugs right in)
  • From the power box there will be 3 or 4 wires, use the provided fuse tap (mini) and crimp them on and then just plug them into the appropriate fuse (IG2 and Door lock) and Black to a solid Ground

Quality:

The quality of the gauges are great and feels sturdy. The numbers match great to the oem cluster and the lights on the gauges are dead on or close to it (oem cluster light is 2 clicks from full bright). These look a better in person than it does in pictures (it can't capture the lights correctly). The only thing I have notice so far is that the Oil Pressure gauge seem quite loud compared to my boost gauge. This is also my first electronic set of gauges and I can't really compare the noise to other gauges.

Readings of the gauges:

Oil Pressure: Cold start its about 100psi, at idle (engine is warmed up) is 20psi, and daily driving its 80-100psi (depending on gear/rpm). From my understanding this is about right and within normal reading.

Boost Gauge: I have compared the reading to the Cobb AP V3 and everything reads correctly. I have set the peak warning at a lower boost and the gauge will flash when going over.

With those number and comparison to the AP and other folks reading for oil pressure, I would say these are very accurate.

Remote:

The remote is very easy to use and it will allow you to make several changes to your gauges such as, peak/pressure warning, brightness, color change (backlight and needle), and it will also allow you to check your peak boost. Also will only need one remote to check/change things on the gauges.

Customer Support/Service:

Customer support have been great throughout the process of getting these gauges. Several members of the first order, including myself, have found some issues and Podi stepped up and helped resolve all of this and even sent out test gauges for testing. The wait was long but I say it was well worth it especially getting it installed and running. Looking forward to exchanging for a V2 boost gauge.

Conclusion:

Overall, I am happy with my gauges and it's well worth the money. It looks great, lights up well, sits great in the SMY Cluster, and best of all it matches the factory cluster. So far those that have seen these gauges in my car, think it looks great and they really like how it resemble the OEM gauges. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for but with these you are getting more than what you are paying for.

Q: What type of controller do I need for the air/fuel ratio gauge?

The gauge is designed to be used with the Innovate Motorsport LC-1 or LC-2 wideband AFR controller. The gauge input range is set to match the default output range of the LC-1 or LC-2 which is 0V=7.35 and 5V=22.39.
